Local News Digest: October 30, 2026

Welcome to the digest

This is our Local News Digest for the week of October 30, 2026: a short roundup of positive and genuinely useful news from the Portland metro and Washington County, with an eye on the businesses, schools and housing shaping the corridor around Bethany and Oak Hills.

Five stories this week, each with a two-sentence summary and a link to the full reporting. We also refreshed our community events calendar today: listings from earlier in the month have been archived, and the page now reflects what is actually upcoming, with the December Winter Lights details newly confirmed.

Mortgage rates ease to 7.24 percent

Freddie Mac's weekly Primary Mortgage Market Survey, dated October 29, put the 30-year fixed mortgage at 7.24 percent, down from 7.32 percent a week earlier and from 7.40 percent two weeks ago. A year ago the average sat at 6.17 percent, so rates remain a lot higher than they were, but the recent direction is gently down.

It is a small easing, not a sea change: day-to-day lender averages cluster in the mid-7s, and the honest takeaway for buyers is to tighten the payment math around today's rates rather than wait for a big drop. Our market post from this week walks through what the move means for a monthly payment.

Winter Lights: December 4 plans firm up

The City of Beaverton has set the evening of Friday, December 4 for this year's Winter Lights tree lighting at Beaverton City Park, with the light displays running from December 1 through January 3, 2027. The Beaverton Area Chamber's Winter Market sets up in the farmers market lot at the park, and the Kids Markets, a market run by kid entrepreneurs ages 5 to 17, returns alongside it, all from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

It is the big holiday kickoff for the Westside and an easy evening destination for Bethany and Oak Hills families. Travel Oregon lists the event with the city's details, and vendor registration for the Kids Markets is on its Eventbrite page.

The Cedar Mill News' October issue

The October issue of the Cedar Mill News rounds up the county and corridor news that matters to Bethany and Oak Hills: an update on the Cornell Road recovery transitional housing project, Washington County's new Community Engagement program, road work notes and the district and parks briefs that neighbor calendars run on.

It is the paper of record for the Cedar Mill-Bethany corridor, and its October parks roundup, linked below, is where the Beetlejuice-style glow-in-the-dark pickleball night at Cedar Hills shows up, one of those small fun items that make a neighborhood feel alive.

A waffle house is headed to the Oak Hills plaza

Batter Up! Waffles, the local waffle restaurant, announced last December that it would relocate to the Oak Hills plaza at 14740 NW Cornell Rd, a move the Cedar Mill News covered at the time as the eatery returns to the corridor's west side.

Local food news moves slowly, so we are watching for the doors to open and will update the dining guide the moment they do. If you have seen the lights on at the plaza, tell us and we will go verify it ourselves.

Read together this winter

The Cedar Mill and Bethany Community Libraries kick off their winter reading program, Cozy Up and Read, in December and run it through January, a low-key way to get through the dark months with the kids or on your own, with reading challenges for all ages.

The Bethany branch serves the neighborhood directly, and the library's reading-challenges page has the details on how it works and how to sign up.

The honest close

Every summary above comes from the linked reporting, and we read the full pieces before including them. We share these stories because they are useful or hopeful for people who live, work and house-hunt in this corridor: if any thread makes you curious about living here, ask us anything.

And if you are planning the next few months, our community calendar is refreshed with what is actually upcoming: Halloween weekend, the farmers market's final Saturdays, the library's holiday lineup and the full December lights calendar.
