Date Night Pick: Amaterra Winery in the West Hills

2026-10-12 3 min read Paul Knighton & Chris Hayes

This week's pick: Amaterra Winery

Every week we point you to one genuinely well-reviewed spot in the Bethany and Portland metro area for a relaxed evening out, a restaurant, a wine bar, an experience worth the drive. This week it is Amaterra Winery at 8150 SW Swede Hill Drive in Portland's West Hills, a short drive from Bethany and Oak Hills and a completely different kind of evening from the two picks we have featured so far.

Amaterra is an urban winery and restaurant perched on a hillside with sweeping views across the Willamette Valley. The wines are made on site, the kitchen runs a seasonal Pacific Northwest menu, and the whole room is designed around the view. It opened in early 2022 and has quickly become one of the Westside's favorite places for a special evening out.

Why it stands out

The reviews are strong and consistent: around 4.1 stars on Yelp across 240-plus ratings, with regulars calling it a hidden gem and a favorite for a date night. In 2026 the winery was named the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice winner for Best Winery Restaurant in America. What people keep mentioning: the view, the wines made on site, the warm service and a kitchen that holds its own with the scenery.

It is the kind of place where the sunset does half the work. The tasting room looks out over the valley, and on a clear evening the light show is genuinely part of the experience.

What to do or order

Our honest advice: start with a tasting flight and let the pourer walk you through the lineup. Amaterra's wines are made on site using a gravity-flow process, and the list is a lovely introduction to what the Willamette Valley does best. Tastings run in the afternoon, with light bites available until late afternoon and full dinner service in the evening.

Add a charcuterie or small-plate selection to share and settle in with the view. For a full evening, book a dinner table and let the seasonal menu do the talking. Reservations are the smart move, especially for the sunset hours and weekends.

The honest price picture

In the spirit of this site's ask-for-current-pricing standard, we do not print dollar figures here either. In general terms, Amaterra sits at the mid-range to upscale end of the date-night spectrum: it is a place you go for a proper evening out, not a quick bite.

One practical note: first-time visits run through a one-time social membership, which is credited toward your first bottles, and members get discounts on flights. The details change, so check their site before you go. The winery is closed Mondays and open Tuesday through Sunday from around noon, with dinner service starting in the late afternoon.

Plan the evening your way

Whoever you go with, or on your own, the room is for you. A hillside view and a good glass of wine are for everyone, and we only feature places that welcome whoever shows up. The drive from Bethany and Oak Hills is short and simple, up into the West Hills on Highway 26.

One standing note for this whole series, on the record: none of our features assumes anything about who you are, who you live with, or what your household looks like. This area has room for everyone, and our picks are for all of you.

Ask us for the next pick

We will feature a new spot every week and keep a running list so nothing repeats. If you try Amaterra and love it, tell us. If you have a favorite of your own that belongs in this series, send it our way and we will test it ourselves.

And if you are weighing a move to Bethany or Oak Hills and want to know what a Friday night actually looks like from a given address, ask us. We know the corridor block by block.
