Welcome to the digest

This is our Local News Digest for the week of October 16, 2026: a short roundup of positive and genuinely useful news around the Portland metro and Washington County, with an eye on the projects and people shaping the corridor around Bethany and Oak Hills.

Five stories this week, each linked to the full reporting so you can read the whole piece. If you come across a story we should feature next week, send it our way.

Ballots are in the mail: now comes the returning part

Washington County's November 3 general election ballots went into the mail on Wednesday, October 14, so they should be arriving at Bethany and Oak Hills mailboxes this week. Oregon votes entirely by mail, and the returning part is simple: sign the envelope, fill it out, and get it back by 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3.

The surest option is an official drop box. Drop boxes sit at every WCCLS library, including the Cedar Mill and Bethany Community Library branches, and at county sites, open 24 hours through Election Day. Our voter's guide covers what is on the ballot and how to track your ballot once it is on its way.

Kids' Halloween fun at the library

Beaverton City Library has a friendly run of family programming before and after Halloween. On Monday, October 26 from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m., the Kids Costume Dance Party welcomes ages 1 to 8 to dance in costume. Then on Sunday, November 1 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Día de los Muertos brings an all-ages celebration with a community art piece and take-home craft kits at the Main Library.

For older kids, the Teen Art Show for grades 6 through 12 opens with a reception on Wednesday, November 4 at 4:00 p.m. and stays up in the Teen Room through Sunday, November 8. All of it is free at the library's Main branch on SW Fifth Street.

A free dance lecture at The Reser, then the full show

The Reser and White Bird host a free lecture demonstration with Hung Dance on Tuesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m., a behind-the-scenes look at the company before its full run. The main event follows Thursday through Saturday, November 5 through 7 at 7:30 p.m. each evening, co-presented by White Bird at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts.

The free lecture is a genuinely low-cost way to see what contemporary dance is up to these days, a short drive from Bethany and Oak Hills.

Farmers markets: two big Saturdays left

The Cedar Mill Farmers Market closes its 2026 season this Saturday, October 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Sunset Mall parking lot at Murray and Cornell, so it is the last chance this year for the corner's Saturday-morning ritual.

The Beaverton Farmers Market runs longer, through Saturday, November 21, and this year it is hosting Halloween at the market on Saturday, October 31. After that the downtown market takes a winter break and returns with its winter hours in February 2027.

Planning ahead: Cedar Mill's tree lighting and new neighbors

The Cedar Mill Business Association and the Cedar Mill News are planning this year's holiday tree lighting in the plaza next to Insomnia Coffee. The exact December date gets posted closer to the season, and we will add it to our community calendar the moment it is confirmed.

Around the corridor, Oregon State Credit Union opened its new Cedar Mill branch at the Timberland Center in September, the latest business to set up along the Bethany and Cedar Mill corridor. The Cedar Mill News' monthly business roundup tracks these openings as they happen.

The honest close

Every summary above comes from the linked reporting, and we read the full pieces before including them. We share these stories because they are useful or hopeful for people who live, work and house-hunt in this corridor.

That is this week's digest, and we will refresh it every week. If any of these threads make you curious about living here, ask us anything.
