Welcome to the digest
This is our Local News Digest for the week of October 19, 2026: a short roundup of positive and genuinely useful news from the Portland metro and Washington County, with an eye on the projects and people shaping the corridor around Bethany and Oak Hills.
Five stories this week, each with a two-sentence summary and a link to the full reporting so you can read the whole piece. If you come across a story we should feature next week, send it our way.
A celebrated chef's first Portland restaurant opens at the Heathman
Bar Sprezzatura, the first Portland restaurant from celebrated chef Michael Mina, opened on Friday, October 16 inside the historic Heathman Hotel in downtown Portland. The Venetian-inspired spot serves bar snacks, spritzes and handmade pasta, with a Portland menu written by chef Justin Ramirez, formerly of Arden and Coquine.
Grits N' Gravy reopens downtown, with a dishwasher-turned-owner in charge
Downtown Portland's Grits N' Gravy, the Southern diner at 215 SW Sixth Avenue that closed in June, reopened this week under new owner Jesús Alejandro Chipres. Chipres started at the restaurant as a dishwasher and worked his way up, and he has kept the classic menu of fried catfish, shrimp and grits.
Rage rooms and axe throwing open at Hopworks Brewery
Rage Room Portland and Celtic Axe Throwers opened inside Hopworks Brewery on Southeast Powell Boulevard, with a grand opening on Saturday, October 17. The new space adds private rage rooms and axe throwing to the brewpub, and the opening doubled as a fundraiser for Oregon Dog Rescue.
The city's housing incentive, one year in
Portland published its first-year report on the temporary waiver of system development charges for new housing, a program that took effect in August 2025. Roughly 980 housing units have been permitted with fees waived and are under construction, though the report says the incentive alone has not been enough to counter high construction costs and financing headwinds for larger apartment projects.
Corridor business news from the Cedar Mill News
The Cedar Mill News' October business roundup tracks what is new along the Cedar Mill-Bethany corridor, including the free Bethany Village Halloween Hunt trick-or-treat walk on Saturday, October 31 and the opening of What's New Furniture in Cedar Mill. It is the paper's monthly look at the shops and businesses that keep the corridor humming, and a good read over coffee.
The honest close
Every summary above comes from the linked reporting, and we read the full pieces before including them. We share these stories because they are useful or hopeful for people who live, work and house-hunt in this corridor.
