Welcome to the digest

This is our Local News Digest for the week of October 20, 2026: a short roundup of positive and genuinely useful news from the Portland metro and Washington County, with an eye on the projects and people shaping the corridor around Bethany and Oak Hills.

Five stories this week, each with a two-sentence summary and a link to the full reporting so you can read the whole piece. If you come across a story we should feature next week, send it our way.

Girls flag football is now an official Oregon sport

Oregon's school sports governing body has made history. The OSAA Delegate Assembly voted on October 12 to sanction girls flag football as an official Oregon sport, with competition starting in spring 2027. It is a genuine milestone for access to school sports, and the corridor's schools are well positioned for it, with strong athletics programs across the Beaverton School District.

For families here the practical note is simple: by this time next year, flag football is likely on the spring sports sheet alongside the usual options. The full reporting covers how the decision came together and what it means for the state's member schools.

A mixed-use project gets underway in Cedar Hills

The Cedar Mill News reports that a mixed-use development is getting underway in the adjacent Cedar Hills area, with roughly 5,000 square feet of retail planned along with parking off Wilshire Street. It is the latest sign of the corridor's slow, steady densification, right next door to Bethany and Oak Hills.

Mixed-use projects like this one add new shops and services near existing neighborhoods, and they are worth watching if you are house-hunting on the corridor, because new retail and housing change how a neighborhood feels over a few years.

Westview stays atop the Metro League

Westview topped Sunset 35-20 on Friday, October 16 to stay atop the Metro League, a game that drew a big crowd in the corridor's own high-school rivalry. Jesuit also beat Beaverton 42-0 the same night, and on the pitch Jesuit's boys soccer team edged Beaverton 2-1 in a key league matchup.

If you have a student at either high school or you are just scouting the neighborhood on a Friday night, the Metro League races are worth following into November.

Halloween week in the corridor

The big family dates are set. Booverton, the ninth annual family Halloween celebration, runs Sunday, October 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in downtown Beaverton with trick-or-treating at participating businesses. Then the Bethany Village Halloween Hunt brings trick-or-treating through the village square on Saturday, October 31 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., right in the middle of Bethany.

For an adults' evening, The Reser hosts Liberace and Liza: The Cedar Hills Have Eyes, a Halloween-night tribute show at 7:30 p.m. on October 31. Our community calendar lists all of it, with organizer links.

THPRD's late-October lineup

Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District has a busy end of October for neighbors who like to get out. The Monster Smash Pickleball Tournament runs Friday through Sunday, October 23 to 25. The Diwali Bazaar lands Saturday, October 24. And the Jenkins Estate Historical Tour offers a look inside the estate's restored mansion on Wednesday, October 21.

Times and locations vary by event, so check the THPRD events page before you go. It is a good reminder that this corridor's community calendar is full even in the quiet weeks.

The honest close

Every summary above comes from the linked reporting, and we read the full pieces before including them. We share these stories because they are useful or hopeful for people who live, work and house-hunt in this corridor.

That is this week's digest, and we will refresh it every week. If any of these threads make you curious about living here, ask us anything.
