Welcome to the digest
This is our Local News Digest for the week of October 23, 2026: a short roundup of positive and genuinely useful news from the Portland metro and Washington County, with an eye on the projects and people shaping the corridor around Bethany and Oak Hills.
Seven stories this week, each with a two-sentence summary and a link to the full reporting. We also refreshed our community events calendar today, so the listings reflect what is actually upcoming.
Halloween weekend is officially here
The family calendar is full and confirmed. Booverton, the ninth annual downtown Halloween celebration, runs Sunday, October 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on Halloween day itself the Bethany Village Halloween Hunt brings trick-or-treating through the village square from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The Beaverton City Library adds a kids costume parade Saturday morning at its Murray Scholls Branch, and the farmers market holds Halloween at the market on its regular Saturday.
For an adults' evening, The Reser hosts Liberace and Liza: The Cedar Hills Have Eyes at 7:30 p.m. on Halloween night. Our full calendar has all of it, with organizer links.
Creo Chocolate opens at Cedar Hills Crossing
Portland craft-chocolate maker Creo Chocolate has opened its first outpost outside Portland at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton, a short drive from Bethany and Oak Hills. It is the kind of small, independent opening that gives the corridor a new reason to linger over coffee and a treat.
The Cedar Mill News has the details on the store and the neighborhood business roundup it appears in.
The district's rightsizing plan takes shape
Beaverton School District, the district serving Bethany, is publicly planning for declining enrollment and a structural budget deficit: superintendent Dr. Tony Smith's plan, reported October 15, could include school closures and boundary changes, and the district frames it as building a strong and sustainable Beaverton. On October 19 four student representatives also joined the school board.
For families this is the most important long-term education story in the corridor right now. The full reporting covers the timeline and what the district has said about keeping decisions public.
We will keep our schools pages and this blog updated as the plan develops.
Mortgage rates ease to 7.32 percent
Freddie Mac's weekly survey put the 30-year fixed mortgage at 7.32 percent for the week of October 22, down from 7.40 percent a week earlier and above the 6.19 percent average a year ago. Other national surveys sit in the same low-to-mid-7s range.
For buyers here the practical message is unchanged: the payment, not the sticker price, is the number that matters, and prepared buyers still have negotiating room in a balanced market. Our market snapshot walks through the September numbers and what they mean.
Ballots are out and drop boxes are open
The November 3 general election is underway in Oregon's vote-by-mail system: ballots went into the mail October 14 and should be in hand, and yours needs to be returned by 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3. Official drop boxes sit at every WCCLS library, including the Cedar Mill and Bethany Community Library branches, open around the clock.
Our voter guide covers the races on the Washington County ballot, how to fill out and sign the return envelope, and how to track your ballot so you know it was counted.
Thanksgiving plans are already set
The Oak Hills Tim Tank Turkey Trot, the neighborhood's Thanksgiving-morning tradition, is confirmed for Thursday, November 26 at 8:00 a.m. in the Oak Hills area: a family-friendly 5K run and walk with a modest entry that benefits a Beaverton School District scholarship.
It is a genuinely local way to start Thanksgiving, and it is already on our community calendar with the registration link.
The honest close
Every summary above comes from the linked reporting, and we read the full pieces before including them. We share these stories because they are useful or hopeful for people who live, work and house-hunt in this corridor.
That is this week's digest, and we will refresh it every week. If any of these threads make you curious about living here, ask us anything.
